Practicing Ahimsa for Yourself

This week, I wanted to focus on the yoga principle of Ahimsa, or practicing compassion, particularly self-compassion.

Taking time to practice self-compassion is essential for our mental and emotional wellbeing. It can help us be more kind to ourselves and make us feel happier and more content in life.

Here are three tips to practice self-compassion as well as two things I'm loving right now that help me do so. 

Tip #1 – Use a Self Compassion Journal 

One great way to practice self-compassion is by using a self-compassion journal. Writing letters to yourself is a great way to reflect on your feelings, talk out your struggles, and give yourself love when you need it the most. By writing these letters regularly, you'll start to get into the habit of taking care of yourself and being more compassionate towards yourself. 

Tip #2 – Make a List of Things You Love About Yourself 

Another helpful tip is making a list of all the things you love about yourself! This could include anything from your physical attributes (like your beautiful eyes) to your unique personality traits (like being a great listener). Revisiting this list every now and then can be an instant mood booster when you're feeling down or overwhelmed. We can sometimes forget how amazing we are, but this list will remind us why we should appreciate ourselves. 

Tip #3 – Take Care Of Yourself 

Finally, taking care of yourself is an important part of practicing self-compassion. Eating well, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep are all important components for good mental health—so don't forget them! Plus, there's nothing better than treating yourself with some quality “me” time every once in a while—whether it’s taking a hot bubble bath or going out for ice cream with friends!

Practicing self compassion with Ahimsa is an important step in improving our mental health. These three tips will help us become more compassionate toward ourselves while also reminding us how amazing we are!
